Mr. G and I are working on detoxing our home and our bodies and eating lots of healthy food to optimize our baby-making efforts! Ideally, I would be a successful author who works 100% from home and cooks delicious, wholesome meals every day. Mmmmm, wouldn't that be nice! However, the truth is that most of us writers have to work our day jobs AND spend time on our craft, so... Sometimes there just isn't time to cook, and it's easy to fall into unhealthy eating habits.
So Mr. G and I have become masters at stocking up on quick, convenient foods with a relatively high nutritional value. Here are some of our favorites!
Sweet treats:
100% fruit juice popsicles
smoothies made with unsweetened frozen fruit, fresh fruit, ice, and sometimes yogurt or orange juice
KIND Plus Cranberry Almond Bars
apples with peanut butter
Savory snacks:
Amy's frozen organic burritos
low sodium mixed nuts
Annie Chun's Chinese Chicken Soup
Panera spinach and artichoke soufflets
string cheese
Tasty Bite Madras Lentils WITH...
Bird's Eye Steamfresh Brown Rice
Writer friends, parent friends, and other busy folks: What are your favorite healthy-ish convenience foods?
Okay now I'm really hungry! I should eat more healthy snacks. I'm afraid I tend to grab the quick and easy garbage!
ReplyDeletechamomile tea got me through both of my pregnancies, and Lemon Balm infusion afterwards. Good luck and don't forget to have a little fun with junk food, too! :)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite snacks are Fiber One bars. Now, they're probably not healthy at all and I'm just fooling myself, but they are high in fiber and that's good!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with your baby-making efforts! Planning a family is such an exciting time. :)
Easy Creamy Banana Ice-Cream (provided you have a good blender):
ReplyDeleteCut Banana into little chunks, pop into a zippy bag and freeze. When you want ice cream, take out, blend with just a little joghurt/cream/buttermilk, add maple syrup/sugar/honey to taste, add cinnamon if you like. The frozen banana gives a great smooth texture (not much in the way of ice crystals). It'll be fairly creamy, but healthy and delicious!
Tessa, that sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteSusan, I'm sure Fiber One bars are a lot better than a candy bar or something. Not everything on my list here is super-healthy--some things are high in calories or sodium, but at least everything I listed is high in nutrients too.
Another thing I forgot to put on here: Gingersnaps. They also help with nausea, like chamomile tea.
When I'm trying to eat healthy, instead of focusing on what I can't have, I just ADD in a whole bunch of healthy foods. Nothing is forbidden--I just don't have as much of an appetite for junk after I've filled up on high fiber and protein snacks. :)
I'm going to flaunt my living in Mexico eating here, sorry, I'm a brat.
ReplyDeleteI love the nopales that I can get from the cocina economica down the street from my job. Cactus boiled with salt, chiles and garlic for flavor. Strained and mixed with diced tomato, onion and cilantro. Served chilled and yes, slimy. It's either love or hate for this, I'm a lover.
To continue with the cactus theme, I love my green shakes-special cactus (i think they use younger small cactus pads for the cactus smoothies) pineapple, celery, a hit of alfalfa and orange or grapefruit juice. Fresh squeezed only, thanks. Blend well, drink.
Alfalfa-aide-a generous handful of alfalfa, some pineapple, a spoon of sugar (raw) and either water or no sugar and substitute orange juice, blended and strained. Served over ice.
I've noticed that since I have been going to the juice bar, my soda cravings are gone. I still drink soda, usually on the weekends (I have to mix all that good tequila with something, come on now!) but through out the week, I have zero desire to drink sodas.
If I get a craving for snacks...I am a bad ex pat and I get fruit from street vendors. Not the best idea, but very tasty. If in the mood for a quick bite, I go to the market and get a torta from the juice bar-usually white cheese and egg. the egg, lettuce, tomato, creme and cheese were all purchased and processed (sliced and diced) that day. The bread is from the bakery across the street.
For a quick sugar buzz, you can get fresh pressed sugar cane or even just sliced sugar cane. You bite and gnaw the cane chunks, spit out the fiber and are given a quick jolt of energy. It's short lived, but surprisingly no crazy crash.
My other no guilt pleasure-fresh coconut water, a truly perfect beverage.
Also, quaker has these RIDICULOUSLY tasty oatmeal cookies out here- granola and oatmeal, oatmeal raisin, oatmeal apple, oatmeal red fruits and my faaaavorites- oatmeal chocolate chip, and the chocolate chips are 70% cacao.
MMMMMMM, Esperanza, you have made me so hungry for Mexico! I've been craving fruity things lately, which isn't very weird but is strange for me, because I don't usually like fruit very much. I ate strawberries from my own garden yesterday! :D
ReplyDeleteAlso, I want one of those oatmeal cookies. Apple pie flavor.
